Yesterday we had the pleasure of doing a photo shoot of our two homes with our friend Rosie! We are so relieved to have it over with, and we literally cannot wait to share the photos with you! That's right friends! We are finally ready to share our homes with you! Everything is clean and in it's proper place, and our friend Rosie is coming down to each of our homes tomorrow to do a photoshoot! Eek! We're so excited! We have been working on finishing up projects and taking care of the final details since the new year, so we're really excited to see the end result and be able to share it with you! We have spent countless hours painting, sanding, sewing, hammering, drilling, crafting, staging, and cleaning so it feels so great to see the fruits of our labor!

Keep you eyes peeled in the coming weeks because there will definitely be a lot of home interior photos on our blog. Yay!

Dresser Makeover Before & After.

As you know, we have both been spending the last month working on giving our homes a little makeover! We are getting very close to finishing up and sharing our home tours with you, so until then we thought it would be fun to share a peek into a project that we have both been working on: re-doing our dressers! We weren't very excited about the look of our old dressers so instead of going out and buying new ones, we decided to give them new life with a fresh coat of stain and paint!

I picked this dresser up at a local Goodwill store about a year ago for only $3! (Seriously. You can't beat that price!) The wood wasn't in the greatest condition so I knew that it would eventually have to be re-done, but it had a great overall shape with cute simple mid-century handles, so I could see that it had a lot of potential.

First of all, I decided to stain the dresser a darker shade to match the rest of my bedroom furniture (the original blonde wood was sticking out like a sore thumb!) So after lots of sanding, lots of staining, and lots of help from my lovely husband (thanks Emery!), the new dresser was starting to take shape!

After the stain dried, I knew that I wanted to do something different and not just leave it plain brown, so after brainstorming and looking at 1960's home decor photos for inspiration, I decided on painting coral and turquoise diamonds on the drawers! So we taped off 3 diamonds across 3 sets of drawers using Frog Tape (this is a stronger version of painting tape that won't allow any paint to leak underneath, which was very important for a project like this.) Then I just used leftover paint that from my living room to paint the diamonds. After the paint dried I added on the original tiny circle handles and 2 cute starburst handles that I had found while thrifting. Aren't those starburst handles amazing? I was pretty excited when I stumbled upon those little gems! So after adding on the handles and decorating it with cute vintage radios my makeover was complete! I am so pleased with how it turned out and love how it looks with the rest of the furniture in my bedroom!

I picked up this unit about 4 years ago with full intentions of giving it a major face-lift. I hated the colors, but loved the piece, and knew that with a little love I could make it look the way I wanted it to.

For the past 2 years this dresser was in my closet room, but I decided to haul it to my bedroom once I had finished painting the room! I painted my bedroom a bright green-y turquoise and knew that I wanted to paint the unit white, to match my fireplace and the rest of my bigger furniture in the room. Lucky for me I had leftover paint in white and the green, so late one night I decided it was finally time to give it the overhaul it so desperately needed!

I started by giving it a good sanding and then a thick coat of oil primer. I took of all of the knobs and painted them with a small paintbrush from Dollarama while the primer dried. Then I gave the dresser 2 coats of the white and let that dry. Next I measured out the width of one of the drawers and divided that number by 5 to get the measurement of a circle that I would need for tracing the scallops that I would make! I found some Tupperware that was the perfect fit and traced on 5 half circles in pencil. Then I went ahead and carefully painted on 2 coats of the green! I put the knobs back on and waited for that puppy to dry so that I could put all my clothes back in! I think it turned out great! Anything was an improvement from that first photo you see from a couple years ago!

Good afternoon, lovelies! Today we are introducing a new Sixties Sunday feature called The ABC's of Vintage which we will be posting about every Sunday for the next 4 weeks!

Felt Heart Garland DIY.

Here is a quick and easy Valentine's inspired DIY project for you on this lovely Saturday afternoon!

All you will need is some felt, invisible thread (or fishing line), a pair of scissors and a sewing needle.

Step 1: Pick 2 or 3 complimentary colors of felt. We decided to go with coral, tangerine and white.

Step 2: Cut out between 50 - 100 hearts (depending on how big you want your garland to be.) They don't all need to be absolutely identical, but try to keep them around the same size.

Step 3: Cut about ten 50 inch long strands of invisible thread.

Step 4: Tie a double knot at the end of one of the pieces of thread.

Step 5: Thread your needle onto the opposite end of the string and sew the needle through the center of the heart (as shown in the photo on the right) until it hits the knot at the bottom of

the thread.

Step 6: Tie another double knot 2-4 inches above the heart you just sewed on.

Step 7: Then sew your next heart on. Feel free to mix and match color patterns. Continue this until your invisible thread is filled with about 10-15 hearts, then you are done one garland strand.

Step 8: Continue Steps 4-7 on the remaining 9 strands of invisible thread.

Once you have all 10 strands full, have fun hanging them in different places! We attached ours to a long piece of fishing wire and hung it as a backdrop behind our mannequins, but they would also look great tied to a branch or a curtain rod! Happy crafting!

DIY Ipad case!

My Ipad has been sitting around, needing a cozy case for awhile, so I thought it was time make my own! We are heading out at the end of March and staying in Southeast Asia for 3 glorious weeks... and the best part? This time our husbands are coming with us! Yay!! We are such lucky ducks that we manged to swing another trip so soon! We are SO psyched to explore, shop, eat, and relax! This has been such a jam-packed year, so we are really looking forward to taking a few weeks to unwind and bask in the sun!

We are hopefully going to travel around a bit while we are there, but we don't have any of those plans solidified yet, but we have 55 days to work out the details! (We've started a countdown already! Eep!) Better start lookin' for cute swimsuits!

We were asked to do a little interview and photoshoot this past Friday which was really exciting! It's been amazing to receive such positive feedback and recognition after only being open for a month!

We stumbled across these vintage Motorola ads from the early 60's awhile back, but we saved them until today to share with you guys! We simply can't get enough of the retro "House of the Future" paintings by Charles Scridde. These advertisements created mostly between 1960 and 1963, were often seen in Life Magazine and The Saturday Evening Post.

All of the photos were found here, but can also be seen in the book, "Window to the Future: The Golden Age of Television which you can buy here!

This one reminds us of Jurassic Park, but in the best way possible!

Betty Crocker is a cultural icon and brand that was created by the Washburn Crosby Company in the early 20's which later merged with other companies to form General Mills. But did you know that the woman behind the company wasn't even named Betty Crocker? Her real name was Marjorie Husted and she was a businesswoman and the creator of the image which later on became an icon.

Even though "Betty" wasn't a real person, we are still in love with her yummy recipes that have been handed down to us from our parents (and even our grandparents!) Here is a peek at Betty Crocker cookbooks throughout the ages...

The soft color palette on the cover of this 1930's cookbook is so beautiful! We would love to have this sitting on our shelves in our kitchens making them look extra pretty.

Atomize your home!

We received a lot of positive feedback from the time capsule homes we posted earlier in the week, so we thought it would be fun to share a few items needed to create an atomic feel in your own home! After seeing those houses we really felt inspired to jazz up our own spaces, so I got to researching atomic decor and compiled a short "atomic necessities" list:

1. A pair of amazing atomic lamps. These would look fantastic on matching end tables beside your bed or on either side of your mid century sofa. Lamps are the perfect way to add character to any room.

2. A starburst clock. You don't get much more atomic than a starburst clock. Can you believe this stunning George Nelson one? Wow. This is at the top of our atomic wishlist!

3. Unique dishware. Yes, it may not be practical for everyday use, but it's great to have something special to bust out at your next dinner party. Doesn't food just to taste better on amazing dishes? If you are looking for something more casual, a good atomic alternative is pastel melmac dishes.

4. Retro printed textiles. Your room will feel more complete with curtains, wallpaper or pillows with a fun atomic print! When in doubt, look for patterns with boomerangs, starbursts, diamonds, and other abstract shapes!

5. A few kitschy knick-knacks. Adding little retro touches, like this starburst coffee carafe, will give your room a more authentic feel! Plus, when have you ever seen a coffee pot with such a unique design?

6. Retro barware. If you're thinking mid-century, you can't forget about the barware! Spaghetti splatter glass or "string glass" is one of my all-time favorites! It is such a unique texture and I'm totally in love with all of the pretty pastel colors.

7. Vintage-inspired appliances. In a perfect world we would all have these beauties in our homes. They are a little bit on the pricier side, but a girl can dream, right?

8. A planter. These make the perfect centerpieces for dining room tables or coffee tables.

Re-cap of the past week!

Ok friends, it's time for a re-cap. We feel like we haven't shared a whole lot of what's going on with us lately, so here's a little update about our last week or two! Happy Wednesday!

This week started out on a great note when our dear friend Rebecca of Manzanita announced a new design that would be named after yours truly! The Stef & Erin cocktail hat is complete perfection with it's crochet scallops and will be for sale in her lovely shop here soon! More good news, we have decided to partner up with Rebecca to bring her crochet masterpieces to Winnipeg where we will be selling them in our shop, Rhymes With Orange in a few months!

Next, my sister moved home to Winnipeg! She's been living in Montreal since my wedding a year a half ago and came home for the holidays and just in time for my birthday! We spent the day in December thrifting, eating perogies and going to the video shoot of our friends' band, The Ripperz. We have been fans of them since we were awkward 15 year olds, and like a good wine they just keep getting better with age! Their newly released cd is on high rotation in my home and we highly recommend you go and take a listen!

We can't wait to do some photo shoots with Megan!

Yesterday we heard some more fantastic news...Mad Men will be supposedly be returning on March 25th and the first episode of season 5 will be directed by none other than Mr Draper himself! We can hardly wait!

Now that we are well into January, shop life is getting back to normal and we finally got around to taking down our aluminum Christmas trees and re-did the front window display!

However it doesn't feel like mid-January whatsoever seeing as how temperatures are way way way above normal! Normally at this time in Winnipeg we are in a deep freeze and the city slows down to a snails pace because of the extreme cold! Not this year though! Temperatures have been above zero for a good chunk of our Winter and we hope it continues!

What else have we been up to this week? Well, we both painted some rooms in our home in preparation for our home tours that we will be sharing with you in the upcoming weeks! We figured that January is the perfect time to do an overhaul of our houses, and we can't wait to share what we've done! Keep your eyes peeled for a couple of sneak peaks on the blog in the next couple of days!

Time Capsule Homes.

Now that the holidays are over, we are attempting to get our homes back in order. Aluminum Christmas trees are being packed away and all of those little jobs around the house that we have been putting off for months are finally being tackled. One of our first goals for the new year is to get our homes into tip-top shape so we can share them with you lovelies! We have been looking into some amazing time capsule homes for inspiration from one of our favorite websites, Retro Renovation, hoping to grab a few ideas for our own houses.

60's makeup tips!

During the 60's some of the most iconic looks of our time were created! They may be a bit bold for everyday wear today, but it's still fun to try something new every now and then! Here are a few tips for achieving a retro look in the comfort of your own home...

"The greatest changes in cosmetic style of the 20th century came about in the 1960's and still greatly influences how makeup artists work today." - an excerpt from Retro Makeup: Techniques for Applying the Vintage Look

Eyes: One of the most defining characteristics of 1960's makeup was the drastic change in eye makeup application. During the 1950's women tended to play it more on the natural side by wearing a neutral shadow paired with the classic winged liner, but by the mid 60's this has totally changed. The new thing to do was to darken the crease of the eyelid with shadow to create more rounded looking eyes. When creating this look at home be sure to only apply the dark shadow to the crease of the eye and keep the lid bare or apply a soft neutral. Women would also apply numerous coats of mascara to their top and bottom lashes and even add thick false lashes to give themselves a doe-eyed doll-like appearance. In the 60's it was all about the eyes!

Face: As far as face makeup goes, it was really kept rather simple. A pale foundation and concealer was applied all over to make the skin look as smooth as possible, and afterwards a very neutral blush was applied. None of the focus was to be taken away from the eyes so just a very soft pink or peach was added to the apples of the cheeks.

Lips: Another major difference from the 1950's to the 1960's was the lip color trends. In the 50's women would highlight their lips by painting them shades of bright ruby red, making them the focal point of their face, whereas in the 60's lips were almost de-emphasized and non-existent. In fact, women with particularly pink lips would cover them with concealer to achieve this neutral look. Pale pink lipsticks were popular, and even some metallic shades were introduced! Quite a difference from the Marilyn Monroe look to the Jean Shrimpton, hey?

Our 12 New Year's Goals.

It's always fun to start a year off on the right foot with goals that you wish to accomplish during the next 365 days. This year we decided to set 12 goals for ourselves/business, which averages out to a new goal every month! Sounds pretty do-able to us! Here they are in no particular order...

1. Take Olive out of province. When we started our mobile vintage boutique we always had the intention of venturing south of the border with it because there's nothing quiet like a good roadtrip!
2. Go back to Thailand. We had the most phenomenal time when we went there in fall, and we would love to go back this spring/summer, but this time we would take our husbands with us! (They were a little jealous last time, ha)

3. Put our sewing machines to better use. We are slightly embarrassed to admit that we haven't tackled any sewing projects in recent memory. However, this year that will change! We plan on being a lot more motivated and inspired to sew sew sew!
4. Do more collaborations. We were lucky enough to have the opportunity to work with several talented people this year, and it has really opened our eyes to how much we love it and how inspiring it is! We are looking forward to continuing this even more in 2012.
5. Design something exclusively for our online shop. It has always been a dream of ours to create something unique of our very own to sell in our shop. We've already started brainstorming and let's just say that the wheels in our heads are already turning...

6. Learn more about photography. This is something that we find very important and have always wanted to learn more about, so this year we are going to dust off our cameras and start shooting!
7. Give our blog a mini makeover. We have had a very successful year with Oh So Lovely, but it is always fun to change things up and keep them fresh!
8. Jazz up our online shop. Over the last year, the majority of our time has been spent setting up our mobile shop and our brick-and-mortar shop, but now that we have both of those under control we will be able to put more time and effort into our online shop. We can't wait to show you all of the vintage gems we've been collecting!
9. Set-up the children's section in Rhymes With Orange. Is there anything cuter than vintage children's clothes? We can't wait to add this addition to our local boutique!

10. Tours of our homes. Many of you have asked to see more peeks into our homes and we are planning on posting full home tours in the near future once we finish all the little projects that we have been putting off for months... (I think we all have those!)
11. Get another tattoo. Just because we love cute tattoos.
12. Share about our weddings. We have been meaning to post about our weddings for awhile now, but there are soo many photos to choose from that it makes it hard for us to organize them and narrow them down. So needless to say, you can expect big wedding posts from us in the future!

A lovely year in review!

In January we created our blog Oh So Lovely Vintage!

We also began restoring our 1956 trailer named Olive!

In February we had our very first DIY post which was making Valentine's Day pizzas!

We both celebrated Valentine's Day away on vacation.

Erin went to Thailand & Bali, and Stef went to Arizona.

March saw the opening of our online shop on Etsy!

Erin did a post about her honeymoon!

Next we shared our first recipe post of sweet tea!

Stef shared about her European honeymoon that she went on back in 2009.

We did a post of amazing photos of Disneyland in the 50's & 60's.

Next we did our first D.I.Y project for the home.

We shared photos of our restoration progress on our trailer, Olive.

We also took part in our first collaboration project with our friend and local designer, Tony Chestnut.

We participated in our very first sale with great success!

And one of the most exciting moments of the year - we revealed the exterior of our trailer turned mobile shop!

We were beyond excited to be featured in the June issue of one of our favorite magazines, BUST!

We fully finished our trailer renovation in June and shared the before & after photos!

We hit the road with our trailer to a number of different fairs, where we did our first "what we wore" post.

We also did a post about our first official event with Olive, which was at the Niverville Fair! How exciting!

We had the privilege of doing another very exciting interview this summer, this time for our local newspaper, the Winnipeg Free Press!

The biggest festival that we participated in this summer with Olive was the Winnipeg Fringe Festival, which was 12 days long and during a heat wave! Whew.

In July we got the very exciting news that we would be moving into a local vintage store, Vintage Glory, and taking over the womens section!

By August we were fully moved into Vintage Glory and we shared some peeks of our new shop!

We are really obsessed with decorating our homes, and loved sharing tips on how to decorate a retro modern home!

Erin told the story of how she was proposed to.

Then Stef shared her engagement story!

We were asked to do a guest post on our friend Katie's blog, where we shared a DIY decorating cute vintage suitcases!

Then we stepped back in time with our vintage Ikea post.

We also received really frustrating news about our potential store move, not to worry though, everything worked out for the best!

Things started looking up right away in October, when we found a new space for our shop to move to!

Later that month we collaborated with a bunch of local talented ladies and did a magical fall forest photoshoot, which later got featured on 100 Layer Cake! Yay!

In November we did another "What We Wore" post featuring "The Ingrid" hat from our friend Rebecca.

Then we took off on a whirlwind trip to Thailand, to get some inspiration for our new shop and to relax before we opened our doors!

We also gave you guys a sneak peak at how our new shop, Rhymes With Orange, was coming along.

In the beginning of December we opened the doors to our brand new vintage boutique, Rhymes With Orange! That really was a dream come true! Our friend, Rosie, took photos of our shop and we shared them in a 2 part post here and here.

We also had a fantastic grand opening party with friends and family to celebrate! That truly was a night to remember.

And last but not least, we shared peeks into what Christmas looks like in our homes. It was a Cozy Christmas at the Thiessen Home and an Atomic Christmas in the Hiebert House!

We just wanted to send warm holiday greetings from our homes to yours! We are taking the day off to spend time with our families and eat lots of delicious home-cooking! This is one of our favorite times of year so we just want to sit back, relax, and enjoy every minute of it! We hope you get a chance to do this same! There is something so serene and magical about this time of year, so be sure to slow down and take it all in!

As you all know, we are huge fans of the iPhone app Instagram! We are totally addicted to taking little snapshots of our homes and daily lives. So when we were asked by one of the community managers over at Instagram if we would be interested in doing an interview for the Instagram blog we were beyond flattered! He was interested in hearing more about our mobile shop so we shared our story with him through some of our favorite Instagram photos! It's hard to believe that it was only last year at this time that we started our blog, Oh So Lovely. 2011 has been such an amazing year for us - we started our blog, we renovated our trailer, we went to our first events with Olive, we quit our day jobs to pursue our dreams, we moved into Vintage Glory to do the womenswear, and finally we opened our very own vintage boutique Rhymes With Orange! Whew! If you would have told us at the beginning of the year that all of this would happen, we would've thought you were crazy! It has definitely been a learning experience and there were a few challenges to overcome, but all-in-all, 2011 has been one of the best years of our lives!

On that note, we can't wait to see what 2012 has in store for us! We are really excited to focus on our blog and introduce some new ideas and features! Christmas in the Thiessen home!

Like Stef, one of my favorite parts of preparing for Christmas is setting up my aluminum tree! As you can see it's starting to look a little haggard due to my cat who loves to rip pieces off the bottom branches and it's turning into a Charlie Brown tree, but I love it nonetheless! This is in my bedroom and I love my new (to me) fireplace!

I have a total of four fireplaces in my home (excessive, I know) two of which are real but no longer work and I love decorating the mantels at this time of year!

This Christmas I plan on catching up on much needed sleep. I also can't wait to give out presents!

My amazing cousin Sara just had this little guy, baby Jack, and I'm thinking of running away with him at our gathering on Christmas Eve! He gives me big time baby fever...

I can't wait to get all dolled up for parties in my new dresses!

Both my husband and I have fairly decent sized families which means a lot of gatherings which I look forward to all year! My little sister is out from Montreal for two weeks which means my whole family is home and I can't wait to eat, drink and relax with them!
