If you like Mad Men...

Then you will love...
The Apartment (1960) stars Shirley MacLaine, Jack Lemmon, & Fred MacMurray and focuses around the interoffice politics and relationships that take place during (and after) work hours. The men are very Don Draper-esque and the women are secretaries that give us a Joan or Peggy vibe. You can seriously see where the makers of Mad Men got their inspiration from!

The film is set in 1959 and takes place in a massive office building with tons of mid-century furniture to drool over. Now if only it was in color so we could see what that couch and those chairs really looked like...

Both leading ladies are cute as buttons! We especially love Shirley  MacLaine 's adorable pixie cut!

The movie is packed full of drama, romance, and laughs, so if you haven't already seen it, we highly recommend it! The Mad Men fanatic inside of you will thank us.

all images were taken as screen shots from the film.

  2. I caught Mad Men in your post title and just had to look! I just recently had a marathon with seasons 1-4 on DVD, just in time for the season 5 premiere. I just LOVE the clothes, furniture, etc. from that era. I will definitely have to add "The Apartment" to my movie list. You are right-those rows of desks look like the old Sterling Cooper!

  7. That's one I haven't seen, I'll be looking for it for sure. I've also not heard of Mad Men, I'll have to check that out as well. I love to watch old movies and shows, I spend most of the time just looking at the vintage pieces in the set.

  9. Love this film! I have such a soft spot in my heart for Fred MacMurray. Shirley MacLaine was so beautiful in all of her films from the 50s and 60s.

  11. Great film! Won 5 Academy Awards! If u like this u might enjoy the musical based on this film "Promises Promises!" Also, Considering the style of the film a few factoids... The art director, Alexandre Trauner, used forced perspective to create the set of a large insurance company office. The set appeared to be a long room full of desks and workers; however, successively smaller people and desks were placed to the back of the room ending up with children. He designed the set of Baxter's apartment to appear smaller and shabbier than the spacious apartments that usually appeared in films of the day. He used items from thrift stores and even some of Wilder's own furniture for the set.
