Well, we've had a busy weekend and this week does not look like it's slowing down at all with Stef's brother's wedding at the end of the week, so I put together a fun playlist that will slow things down and make ya feel a little mushy. Happy listening!

We've got music on the mind lately. We've been on the hunt for new music to listen to for the past little while and thought we'd would share some of our favorite party jams to listen to lately.

I haven't been to a really good show in quite awhile, but recently got tickets to go see James Vincent McMorrow (who is one of my all time favorites) in March, as well as Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings in April! I can hardly wait!

Deep freeze playlist

This photo is one of my favorites. It's of my grandma in their old Fiat with the kids in the back. I have loved this car as long as I can remember and when I turned 16 I almost bought a lime green one and am still kicking myself that I didn't get it.

Well, with talk that Winnipeg has literally been a few degrees colder than Mars in the past week, we thought we would put together a playlist for those of us who simply can't fathom the thought of bundling up and going outside. Stay in. Read a book. Clean out your cupboards. Write a letter. Whatever you do, stay warm.

How to throw a Wes Anderson themed party.

I don't know about you guys, but I'm always a bit of a sucker for a theme party. I've attended and hosted quite a few in my day, so I am always looking for new or different party ideas. Since the temps started to drop here I have been spending way more time indoors having movie marathons on my couch. Last week I decided to have a Wes Anderson marathon and it made me realize that it doesn't matter how many times I've seen these movies, I still get caught up in all of the eccentric details and elaborate sets. I found myself wishing that I too was living in such a quirky environment when the idea hit me: why not throw a Wes Anderson themed party? How fun would that be?! So I compiled a little list of essential items needed to pull of such an event just in case you too have the same dream:

WEAR: Take a page out of Margot Tenanbaum's book and rock a fur coat and load on the black eyeliner or just keep it simple and throw on some knee socks a la Moonrise Kingdom and a cozy toque like everyone was sporting in the The Life Aquatic.

EAT & DRINK: Get your champagne flutes out of the china cabinet because this event calls for plenty of bubbly and a great option for this is Passion Pop (one of our guilty pleasures as of late.) As far as food goes, just keep it simple with munchies and finger food. Pay homage to Rushmore with mini PB&J sandwiches. (Or try this recipe for grilled crab and shrimp mini sammies!)

HEAR: This is the perfect time to bust out your old turntable and throw on some vinyl. Spin the likes of Francoise Hardy, The Rolling Stones, Sigur Ros, and The Kinks.

PLAY: This is a great excuse to dust off any old board games you have hiding at the back of your closet. Think: Scrabble, Monopoly or maybe even a good old fashioned game of charades.

These are just a few ideas to get the ball rolling, obviously there are many more details you can incorporate into your party to make it even more over the top! Happy party planning! XO

So a few nights ago, I was looking for a movie to watch on Netflix and I stumbled across this gem. I had never even heard about it before, but man was it ever a pleasant surprise. I haven't seen a film like this in quite some time, and it was so refreshing! 

I don't want to give too much away, but it's a film that takes place in 1958 and is about a girl named Rose who leaves her home town wanting more in life, and becomes a secretary for a handsome Frenchman named Louis. He quickly realizes that she is a whiz with a typewriter and trains her to hopefully become the world's fastest typist.

From the opening credits I knew this was a movie right up my alley. From the colors to the font, I was completely hooked.

The costumes in this film were spot on, and this dress was clearly no exception!

Eep! You guys! We leave in a week!! SO excited! I guess that means we better start packing, so to put ourselves in the mood we made a fun playlist to pack to. Hope this starts your Monday off on the right foot!

Music to our ears.

The leaves are starting to change and summer is slowly turning into fall which means that it is time to start knocking things off of our giant to-do list that we have been putting off all summer long. We are working together more at the store this month in preparation for our trip in a few weeks so we decided to make a playlist of all of our current faves to keep us inspired throughout the day.

Rosemary's Baby (1968)

There is something about a stormy summer evening that puts us in the mood to watch a classic horror movie... and if the star of the movie just happens to be Mia Farrow wearing cute sixties mini dresses and rocking not one, but two adorable hairstyles then all the better! Don't get me wrong, the movie is certainly not all sunshine and rainbows and it definitely has a dark side to it, but we can always look past all of that and appreciate a classic 1960's setting.

Rosemary's Baby is one of those classic horror movies that everyone always refers to, like Psycho, that I'm sure most of you have seen. For those of you haven't here is a quick plot summary: the movie takes place in 1965 in New York city following a young couple, Rosemary Woodhouse (played by Mia Farrow) and her husband Guy Woodhouse (John Cassavetes), who have just moved into a new apartment. They quickly become acquainted with some strange new neighbors and bizarre occurrences start happening shortly after. Also, not long after getting settled into their new place Rosemary discovers that she is pregnant but begins to suspect that the baby may be from the sinister side.

What we enjoyed most about this movie is the fact that it was an unexpected source of 1960's fashion inspiration! Mia Farrow is sporting the cutest mod mini dresses throughout the entire movie (and her entire pregnancy!) and it really inspired us to get up and throw on a cute floral dress and a pair of low square heels ASAP!

The cast of characters in this movie is a definitely a colorful one! But hey, the more eccentric the more interesting, right?

Like we said earlier, we are absolutely loving the quirky 1960's style throughout the entire film. Bold prints, over-sized collars, and short dresses galore! Also, Mia Farrow can be seen rocking her iconic pixie haircut here! She flawlessly transitions from a blunt bob to a short pixie cut like it's no big deal. What a woman. 

Keep this movie in mind the next time you are in the mood for something retro yet slightly creepy.

Our video on MTV!

While we were on our last trip in Thailand, we were contacted by the wonderful people of MTV wondering if we would be interested in doing a video collaboration with them and Sony Experia! Until this, we had never done any kind of work on film before, so we were super nervous about how it would turn out, but we honestly couldn't be happier with the results! We spent two days shooting the video and had the best time doing so! We shot at our shop Rhymes With Orange, as well as with our trailer Olive, and at Stef's house. We are over the moon with excitement and are so thrilled to finally share it with you guys! We will be giving you more information about the contest tomorrow, but for now watch the video, or go to MTV's website to see a wider version of the video! Eep! We're going to be on cloud nine all day long!

MCM Inspiration from Modern Movies.

Looking for a dose of mid century style inspiration? Well, you don't necessarily need to go all the way back to the fifties or sixties to find it. Many modern movies are paying tribute to MCM style, and by the looks of it these movies seem to have one thing in common: they are usually cast Leonardo DiCaprio or Julianne Moore as the starring actor/actress (they must really enjoy playing retro characters!) Here are a few movies that we recommend you check out if you are looking to relax and give your eyes a little mid century style treat!

Revolutionary Road set in 1955.

We love the calm fifties neighbourhood that this movie is set in. The yards are big and full of trees with gorgeous 1950's cars cruising the streets. It all has such a tranquil and relaxing vibe. Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio always make such an attractive couple (Hello Titanic!) but when they are all decked out in their 1950's best they look that much better! Although the movie does have a sad ending, we can at least appreciate all of the attention to detail that was put into setting up such an elaborate retro set. 

Shutter Island set in 1955.

Overall this is a pretty dark movie, but we still managed to find some inspiring interiors! Our favorite part is when Leonardo DiCaprio's character flashes back to his old home filled with turquoise doors and plaid wallpapered walls. You know us, anything with a pop of turquoise will catch our attention! Also Michelle Williams' Hawaiian floral sundress is pretty amazing and makes us long for warm humid summer nights.

A Single Man set in 1962.

There are so many beautiful interior and exterior shots in this movie we don't even know where to start! Colin Firth's character lives in the most gorgeous ultra-modern sixties glass house full of sleek furniture, clean lines and lots of teak. While Julianne Moore's character lives in a lavish romantic sixties home, complete with a circular couch. How amazing is that? Our favorite scene is when they are having dinner together and she throws on a record and they both dance around the living room doing the twist. We love how their black and white wardrobe pops against the pale pink furniture and walls. Great costume designing!

The Hours partially set in 1951.  

For those of you who haven't seen this movie, there are three story lines that take place in different eras: the 1920's, 1950's and the 2000's. Obviously we are drawn to the 1950's especially because of the big beautiful kitchen inside of the L.A. suburban home that Julianne Moore's character is living in. It is filled with gorgeous old appliances, Pyrex and other fun retro kitchen gadgets which is totally our weakness! There are also plenty of pretty costumes and gorgeous old homes from the storyline that takes place in the 1920's as well.
